Note: This course began on Monday, February 1, 2021. Final Presentations will be given on Thursday, March 18, 2021 (Group A) and Friday, March 19, 2021 (Group B).
For my classes, please check your Office 365 email on a regular basis. You go to Office 365 and access the account with your username (i.e. [email protected]) and usual password. That is where you go to see my emails (personal or group). ComMedia students post assignments on their websites as always, but use email to ask questions.
Note: All ComMedia 30 students are in Group A since this is a multi-grade course and simultaneous instruction can occur for the whole group.

Please note that the Modules with ** in front of the title will be covered in 2020-21. Due to the reduction in class/teacher direct contact, some parts of the curriculum needed to be touched on in other units.
**Module 01: Introductory Video & WebsiteAn Video of Introduction - Home Assignment (this assignment is also shown under the calendar where Home Assignments are listed).
Please do the assignments below in order. We will place them on your website once you have it built.
b. Select something that is special to you and focus the camera on that for a brief time while you talk about it (i.e. your dog, a piece of art, your guitar, your mom, if she agrees to be filmed). If you film outside, the lighting will be better, but you can film indoors if the area is brightly lit. c. Turn the camera back on yourself and tell about one of your favorite things to do (different than b.). Be passionate when you describe it. We are going to post these videos on our Home page on the websites we will be building. Don't worry. The websites are private so the public cannot view them. For now, save your video in your phone, in your computer, or on a memory stick. Due Date: Friday, February 5, 2021 Building a Website - Class Assignment
Students will be instructed as to how to build a website in weebly.com. This website will only be visible to Mrs. Bitner and the student. Of course, the expectation is that all assignments are shared with the parent(s). All the student accounts are within Mrs. Bitner's school account for security reasons. Each student is assigned a username, but selects their own private password. This allows the student to work at the website at home. Mrs. Bitner has an administrator's password which allows her to see all student websites for maintenance and marking. Only specified material can be placed on this site since it is for class use only. If inappropriate material is placed on the site, it will be removed or the website will be removed and the student will need to start again from scratch. Students must place all assignments, as directed, on their own website for marking. It is important that students hit Publish once the assignment is added or the instructor will not be able to see the assignment. In addition to the assignments, the following must be completed. These items count toward the website setup mark.
Due Date: Friday, February 12, 2021 **Module 2: Filming Special EffectsStudent selected topic.
If you have chosen this optional module, you want to experiment with various visual effects that you can accomplish with Adobe Premiere Pro. The first video just shows some simple adjustments that can make a big difference in your film. The remaining videos give some ideas, but you are expected to search for visual effects that are of greatest interest to you. Your final video must show evidence of significant learning in this area of study.
Due Date: March 15, 2021 ( included in yhour Final Project)
**Module 03: Filming TechniquesPart One - Writing a Script
Students are expected to make a video right off the hop to sharpen skills that they learned in Com Media 10. This project involves planning a video that will show how to play a very simple game such as snakes and ladders or Uno. The first part of the assignment is to write a script. It is too difficult, at this point, to speak while recording as simultaneous characters, so a voice-over script is expected. You can record the voice-overs at school with the lapel microphone when you are ready. Due Date: Friday, February 12, 2021 Part Two - Filming Raw Footage This part involves filming raw footage and then having the instructor place it on the Multimedia drive (using instructor's computer) so that it can be edited in Premiere Pro by you. The other option is to put all your footage onto a quality flash drive, but you must be sure to always have it at school until the export is complete. You will need at least three scenes when you appear twice in the film. It is a great technique to include lots of close up shots and cutaways in order to avoid having to make too many movements when you are cloned. Altogether, the video should only be 1.5-2 minutes in length. Part Three - Editing and Exporting the Video Students will be expected to include the following:
Assessment Date: TBA
**Module 04: Legal & Ethical IssuesCommunications Media 10 students explore copyright and online safety. The work done in this module builds into the final project.
Assignment: Part One Com Media 30 students will explore Canada's stance on copyright and posting to YouTube.com
Paragraph 1 - (topic sentence) "The articles are similar in many ways." Then provide detailed evidence. Paragraph 2 - (topic sentence) "The articles are different for these reasons." Then provide detailed evidence. Part Two

How to Write a Video Release Form (Waiver) Write a Video Consent Form Toastmasters International Video Release form Module 05:**After Effects
The curriculum guide offers an optional unit regarding animation. The objectives are as follows:
a. Reflect on the purposes and advantages of using animation rather than live action. b. Create a project or portion of a personal or group project using animation. c. View and analyze animation styles and techniques and share insights with peers.
Adobe After Effects takes editing just a little bit farther than what you can achieve with Adobe Photoshop Pro. Adobe After Effects is a digital visual effects, motion graphics, and compositing application used in the post-production process of film making. After Effects can be used for keying, tracking, compositing and animation. Try it out if you have the time. You will love what it can add to your project.
The videos below will give you an idea what Adobe After Effects can and cannot do well.
Our online speaker, Brooklynn Bitner, will guide you through the initial stages of creating your own animation and introduce the tools in the program that you can use to enhance your videos. Brooklynn holds two bachelors degrees from the University of Saskatchewan: the first is a 4 year Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Studio Art, and the second if a Bachelor of Fine Arts Honors degree in Theatre Design. She is working professionally both as a Theatre Designer and a Graphic/Game Designer/Digital Artist. With her partners, she has developed a company, Sightlines, that handles all aspects of theatrical productions. They have kept busy during Covid restrictions since they are experts with technology.
Due Date: March 18, 2021 ( included in your Final Project)
Extras
You will need to review some of the tutorials below to build your skills. Also, the first link below is a list of helpful keyboard shortcuts that anyone trying to learn After Effects should start to memorize. AE is a complicated program with lots of small, editable functions, but it doesn't have a tool bar to choose from like most Adobe programs. Learning these shortcuts can hugely reduce the time you spend animating. Useful After Effects Tutorials and Resources:

Module 06: Scripts to ProductionWe are not doing this module during Level 3 or 4 Covid restrictions.
Writing Script is not a step to be rushed or overlooked. The technical script forms the basis of all decisions made about your video.
Take a look at the technical script that I wrote for my video titled "When Earth Meets Sky" in 2016. You will see the finished video in the next module.
Assignment #1 - A Day in the Life of . . . (divided into two parts/2 weeks)
Here is something fun to try. Pick an ordinary everyday thing: a rock, hammer, wrench, fork, etc.
Part 1 - write a script (Apr 20-24) Choose your topic and write the script this week. You can see mine below. Have fun with it since the material is not meant to be serious. We are using it to experiment with editing. You need about 1 1/2 minutes of script when read continuously. Here is mine.
Part 2 - (Apr 27- May 1) The production of this video is intended to be fun and to give students the opportunity to try out a video app on their phones. I have used KineMaster to make the silly little video above. It is not the content of the video that is important. I was able to make a title, add/capture video, add transitions/effects, drop in music (mine is from Garage Band), add voice-overs (right inside KineMaster), and make rolling credits. It was certainly fun and did not take long. The app is quite easy to use and there are lots of youtube.com videos that are helpful. When exporting, choose HD 720P and 30 fpm. If you already have a YouTube channel, just open your app and choose the video from your photos file. Be sure that you choose "unlisted" and copy the link. Post to the Production page on your website using the youtube icon or from your file using the HD video icon.
Assignment 2:
Practice script writing: Your instructor will provide you with two props (or you can bring 2 simple props from home, such as a coffee mug and a yoyo). In Word, make a table with three columns. Title them "Script", "Timing", and "Shots/Movements". Put a title at the top of the page along with your name.
Due Date: Thursday, October 5, 2017
Assignment 3:
Become familiar with the basics of Premiere to help you edit your videos. Check out the helpx.adobe.com video tutorials to give you a better understanding of how the program works. Try Basic Video Editing Techniques (active link) provides you with six basic lessons to help you edit your video. We will start by each student creating an edited video of their first script (done with props). When you have done all six tutorials, you are ready to import your group's video for editing. Do the following with your video:
Transfer your video to Mrs. Bitner's memory stick for marking. Due Date: TBA Assignment 3:
In preparation for your final project, it is important that you consider your opening, establishing, and closing shots. Opening Shot: Sets the tone for the movie, introduces the set/character in a unique way, and gives the audience some hints about what is to come. Establishing Shots: These are what might be referred to as B-roll. These shots are taken at a time other than the main recording events with actors. They feature the setting with images rather than words and include unique angles and perpective. Closing Shot: This shot brings the film together in a well-thought image that brings the subject of the film to a memorable conclusion. Consider the technique of many film directors in somehow representing a similarity to the opening image. Practice taking these kinds of shots. Write about how you will plan for these in your Final Project Plan (Module 9). Due Date: Include these aspects with your Final Project. Grade 12 students must also learn to storyboard a script. Check out the resources below.
Module 07: Video Post-ProductionWe are not doing this module during Level 3 or 4 Covid restrictions.
