Photography 20 is an intermediate course intended to give students a deeper understanding of photography and editing. Students will take a variety of photos, then edit and evaluate them according to the elements of composition. The final project will require that students incorporate all learning to prepare a portfolio to be posted on their website.

To keep the class on the same schedule, Grade 10's will follow the Grade 11/12 time schedule for this class.
Classroom expectations: The bell schedule will be followed to observe requirements for social distancing. Attendance will be taken at the beginning of class and each hour thereafter. Please be on time. The break time will be at the discretion of your teacher, but you will have time to go to the washroom and fill up your water bottle in that time. It will be at approximately the same time each day. Use your break well so that you can stay focused in class.

We are still expected to cover all the material outlined in this course in the time allotted. A two-hour period requires that you are focused for two hours.

Module 01: Website & PhotojournalismPart 1 - Photography Magic/Illusions
We will start out by having a little fun setting up shots. Photography is fun. Learning the skills needed to take great photos is important. One of the first things we need to understand is that taking great photos often takes time. Point and shoot photos are sometimes great by chance, being in the right place at the right time. But, when we check out the masters, you will see how they sometimes take hours to get that perfect shot. They take lots of the same shot to get the best image. Assignment:
Part 2
In order to display original photographs and assignments for marking, each student will create a private weebly.com website in the instructor's account. These sites are only available to be viewed by the instructor and student (of course, to be shared with parents). Photos/assignments must be uploaded to the website for each unit by the specified due date. Students must place all assignments, as directed, on their own website for marking. It is important that students hit Publish once the assignment is added or the instructor will not be able to see the assignment. In addition to the assignments, the following must be completed. These items count toward the website setup mark.
Part 3 Students will explore photojournalism as a career option. They must research online and create a one page original article with accompanying photos. A rubric will be used for evaluation. See the rubric below for specific expectations. Due Date: TBA Assessment: see rubric below
Module 02: Basic Photographic SkillsStudents study the Elements of a Good Photograph in class. This was done using an instructor created Power Point. A PDF version is on the main Photography page for review following the lesson.
Photography 20 students took pictures utilizing these techniques in Photography 10. A printable copy of the various Elements is attached below for reference. Students are expected to show their understanding of the Elements in the photographs done in the remainder of the course. Assignment: Choose four different Elements discussed in class. Photograph three shots of each different Element (i.e. three different perspective shots, three different leading lines shots, three different depth shots, and three different live subject shots). Post these on a web page called "Elements". Include a heading above each group of three (i.e. Perspective Shots). Due Date: Friday, , 2020
Variety of Shots
Review the Variety of Shots assignment that you did in Photography 10. There is no assignment for you in the Shots section since you have done it. It is expected that you will use a large variety of shots in your Photography 20 assignments. The checklist is below for you to print for reference as you go out shooting photos.
Assignment: Make a small collection of photos
Place your finished photos on the Elements page of your website. Make comments about why you chose the photo and what it represents to you. Altogether, with the two assignment sections about, you should post about 12 photos.

Learn the basics of focal length on a digital camera.

This video is seen from a third person point-of-view, perpendicular to that of what the camera user would see. Depth of field is a phenomenon of near and far, forward and backward from the point of focus. Changing our point of view rotates the axis of the depth of the field 90˚ so that we may view it laterally across the X axis. This helps us better understand the optic principles at play. The overlays in this video visually quantify the changing depth of field at the given lens setting.

The video to the left will give you some ideas about how to edit this scene. The first part just imports their shutterstock photos so you can skip by this and start the video at about 4:20 to get ideas. Many manipulation videos do not include people talking, so you need to watch carefully.
