Note: This course begins on Monday, February 1, 2021. Final Presentations will be given on Thursday, March 18, 2021 (Group A) and Friday, March 19, 2021 (Group B).
For my classes, please check your Office 365 email on a regular basis. You go to Office 365 and access the account with your username (i.e. [email protected]) and usual password. That is where you go to see my emails (personal or group). ComMedia students post assignments on their websites as always, but use email to ask questions.
Note: All ComMedia 20 students are in Group B since this is a multi-grade course and simultaneous instruction can occur for the whole group.

Please note that the Modules with ** in front of the title will be covered in 2020-21. Due to the reduction in class/teacher direct contact, some parts of the curriculum needed to be touched on in other units.
**Module 01: Introductory Video & WebsiteAn Video of Introduction - Home Assignment (this assignment is also shown under the calendar where Home Assignments are listed).
Please do the assignments below in order. We will place them on your website once you have it built.
b. Select something that is special to you and focus the camera on that for a brief time while you talk about it (i.e. your dog, a piece of art, your guitar, your mom, if she agrees to be filmed). If you film outside, the lighting will be better, but you can film indoors if the area is brightly lit. c. Turn the camera back on yourself and tell about one of your favorite things to do (different than b.). We are going to post these videos on our Home page on the websites we will be building. Don't worry. The websites are private so the public cannot view them. For now, save your video in your phone, in your computer, or on a memory stick. Due Date: Friday, February 5, 2021 Building a Website - Class Assignment
Students will be instructed as to how to build a website in weebly.com. This website will only be visible to Mrs. Bitner and the student. Of course, the expectation is that all assignments are shared with the parent(s). All the student accounts are within Mrs. Bitner's school account for security reasons. Each student is assigned a username, but selects their own private password. This allows the student to work at the website at home. Mrs. Bitner has an administrator's password which allows her to see all student websites for maintenance and marking. Only specified material can be placed on this site since it is for class use only. If inappropriate material is placed on the site, it will be removed or the website will be removed and the student will need to start again from scratch. Students must place all assignments, as directed, on their own website for marking. It is important that students hit Publish once the assignment is added or the instructor will not be able to see the assignment. In addition to the assignments, the following must be completed. These items count toward the website setup mark.
Due Date: Friday, February 12, 2021 **Module 2 - Practice Makes Perfect Part One - Writing a Script Students are expected to make a video right off the hop to sharpen skills that they learned in Com Media 10. This project involves planning a video that will show how to play a very simple game such as snakes and ladders or Uno. The first part of the assignment is to write a script (see the script template below). It is too difficult, at this point, to speak while recording as simultaneous characters, so a voice-over script is expected. You can record the voice-overs at school with the lapel microphone when you are ready. Technical Script Due: Friday, February 12, 2021 Part Two - Filming Raw Footage This part involves filming raw footage and then putting it onto a USB stick. Each student must have their own with them every day. You will need at least three scenes when you appear twice in the film. It is a great technique to include lots of close up shots and cutaways in order to avoid having to make too many movements when you are cloned. Altogether, the video should only be 1.5-2 minutes in length. Raw Footage: At school ready to edit the first morning after February break (additional footage may be added if needed during editing, retakes, but the core material must be recorded and ready) Part Three - Editing and Exporting the Video (done on Premiere Pro in class) Students will be expected to include the following:

In this unit, students must explore potential careers in media production. There are two resources provided with research data. Students are encouraged to use other available resources to enhance their research. Note that there are two separate assignments to be placed in separate sections on the "Careers" page on the student's website. Samples of the structure of these assignments are shown below.
Part 1 - In module 04 "Career Opportunities" on your website, create an attractive display with pictures and text showing the "employability skills" that you already possess (see the brochure below). Part 2 - Using the Department of Employment and Social Development article, explore the kinds of jobs that you could get in communication or video production (use these as your key words for a search). Describe one of those jobs in detail. Be sure to include a pleasant format for the website viewer. Sample Assignment Part 1
Be sure to credit, somewhere on your page, the Employability Skills 2000+ brochure from http://www.conferenceboard.ca/spse/employability-skills.aspx
Below is a sample of what the assignment could look like on your website. Of course, it must highlight your skills, not mine.
Sample Assignment Part 2Due Date: Tuesday, March 16, 2021
**Module 05: Legal & Ethical IssuesCommunications Media 20 students explore copyright and online safety. The work done in this module builds into the final project.
Assignment: Part One In this part of the assignment, you will be required to research culturally sensitive themes as they relate to making video. Use this article, Words Matter (active link), to learn about language that is inclusive. When writing scripts for film (video) you must use inclusive language.
Part Two (we will only do this section if waivers are needed for final videos)

Writing Script is not a step to be rushed or overlooked. The script forms the basis of all decisions made about your video.
Take a look at the script that I wrote for my video titled "Cowboys & Dinosaurs Adventure" in 2014. You will see the finished version in the next module. Assignment #1 - A Day in the Life of . . . (divided into two parts/2 weeks)
Here is something fun to try. Pick an ordinary everyday thing: a rock, hammer, wrench, fork, etc.
Part 1 - write a script (Apr 20-24) Choose your topic and write the script this week. You can see mine below. Have fun with it since the material is not meant to be serious. We are using it to experiment with editing. You need about 1 1/2 minutes of script when read continuously. Here is mine.
Part 2 - (Apr 27- May 1) The production of this video is intended to be fun and to give students the opportunity to try out a video app on their phones. I have used KineMaster to make the silly little video above. It is not the content of the video that is important. I was able to make a title, add/capture video, add transitions/effects, drop in music (mine is from Garage Band), add voice-overs (right inside KineMaster), and make rolling credits. It was certainly fun and did not take long. The app is quite easy to use and there are lots of youtube.com videos that are helpful. When exporting, choose HD 720P and 30 fpm. If you already have a YouTube channel, just open your app and choose the video from your photos file. Be sure that you choose "unlisted" and copy the link. Post to the Production page on your website using the youtube icon or from your file using the HD video icon.
Assignment #2 - Practice script writing: Your instructor will provide you with two props. In Word, make a table with three columns. Title them "Script", "Timing", and "Shots/Movements". Put a title at the top of the page along with your name.

It is important to follow your script when filming your video. This is a video I made for Wanuskewin Heritage Park in 2013. I own the rights, but I have given them the rights so that they can post it on their youtube channel. The script was carefully developed, but little events throughout the filming necessitated changes to the final video. Notice all the different camera angles. The music is recorded by the famous First Nations singer, John Noon. Using another person's work involves permission and audio work that will honour them. Also, notice that this film includes some special effects added later.
